Q
Using your Gateway computer in foreign countries

a This issue is for
 All system

After you purchased the Gateway computer in Japan and take it to foreign countries, you may have difficulty of using your computer because of different environment. This following information gives you some idea for your understanding.

As you probably know, a wall socket voltage in Japan is 100V but other countries may be different and also a shape of power plug will not be a same. Since all Gateway computers have a power unit that a regulator is built in. It will adjust an input voltage to the computer by either automatically or flipping the regulator switch. The input voltage for a portable computer and Gateway Profile will be regulated automatically but if you have a desktop computer and to change the regulator setting, slide a red switch where is located at a backside of your computer. For example, since the switch has set to 115V as default in Japan, you DO NOT slide it to change the setting when you bring the computer from Japan to the United States. Because it also covers the voltage in the United States. However, if you go to counties that provide 240V from a wall socket, slide the switch from 115V to 240V BEFORE you turn on your computer. It is extremely important to change the regulator setting to prevent from frying your computer. If a shape of wall socket has different from the shape of power plug of your computer, please have an adapter to adjust the difference.

Regarding to your Gateway monitor, it does not have the regulator switch such as your desktop computer has but it regulates the input voltage automatically as same as your portable does. Of course, having some kind of power surge protector is more to protect your computer and your monitor.

All other peripheral devices such as a printer, a scanner, or speakers do not usually equip self-voltage adjust mechanism and those devices are designed to be used in each country where you purchased. In other words, they can not handle a higher input voltage and they may not function properly even use them with a voltage transformer or equivalent equipment. You must purchase compatible devices there again if you would like to use the peripheral devices properly.

Allowable input voltage for each system. Please take a look at a following chart as your reference.

System TypeVoltage
Desktop Series115V/230V
When you need to change the regulator setting, slide the red switch where is located at the backside of your computer.
Portable Series100-120V/200-240V
An AC adapter automatically regulates the input voltage.
Gateway PROFILE Series100-120V/200-240V
An AC adapter automatically adjusts the input voltage.
Gateway Monitor100-110V/200-240V
A Monitor automatically adjusts the voltage.
Gateway Speakers100V
It will be fried if you use it in countries where are a higher input voltage provided.

If your system equips a modem and you use it for the Internet or e-mail, you may not use it at all or you can not get full performance from it. Because this device is also designed to be used in the country where you purchased and it must meet a regulation of each country to use it officially and without encountering any problems. For example, it must be certified by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication if you use it in Japan. In the United States, it must be certified by the Federal Communications Commission. Of course, you may use it unofficially and without encountering any problems. However, when you have a problem with your modem, you may need to replace it or you must buy a new modem there.

When you pack the system, make sure it seats in a box nicely and securely tight. We recommend you to use the Gateway original box for the packing. Because it is designed for the Gateway computer and it has uniquely shaped cushions. If you have already lost it or thrown it away, you can find other box as your alternate choice. Then also make sure the system is secured in the box. For more security purpose, you had better have insurance in case of any loses or damages.

Finally, when you get other countries, please contact to Gateway brunches to get your another customer ID (client ID). When you get the new ID, you also entitle to receive the similar support service that Gateway Japan provides you in Japan. On the other hands, you will loose some service. For more details about the difference, please contact to our Customer Service.
